About This Material
Joint compound (also called mud) is the plaster-like material used to embed drywall tape over joints, fill screw holes, and create a smooth finish surface ready for paint. The main types are: all-purpose (premixed, ready to use, good for all coats), lightweight all-purpose (easier to sand, preferred for finish coats), topping compound (thinner, designed specifically for final coats), and setting-type compound (powder mixed with water, sets by chemical reaction and is very hard — good for tape coats and repairs). A standard 4.5-gallon bucket of premixed compound covers approximately 15 to 16 sheets of drywall over three coats (tape, fill, finish). Buckets cost $12 to $18 each. For large jobs, buy compound in 5-gallon boxes which are easier to load into a mud pan. Setting-type compounds (like Durabond or Easy Sand) come in 18-pound and 45-pound bags and are available in set times from 5 minutes to 90 minutes. Joint tape (paper or mesh) is used with the first coat to reinforce the joints.
Installation Tips
- •Apply 3 coats: tape coat, second coat (thin out), finish coat.
- •Sand between coats when fully dry.
- •Use lightweight compound for final coat for easier sanding.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Applying compound too thick — causes cracking.
- Not waiting for full dry between coats.
- Using setting-type compound for finish coat — too hard to sand.
