How many buckets of joint compound do I need?

Plan for approximately one 4.5-gallon bucket per 15 to 16 sheets of drywall, applied over three coats. For a 75-sheet project, you need about 5 buckets. If you are applying a textured finish (knockdown, orange peel, etc.), add 50% more compound to account for the texture application.

Should I use paper tape or mesh tape?

Paper tape is stronger and preferred for inside corners, butt joints, and any joint that will experience movement. Mesh tape is self-adhesive and faster to apply but is weaker and more prone to cracking. What is setting-type joint compound and when should I use it?

Premixed joint compound typically takes 12 to 24 hours to dry completely, depending on temperature, humidity, and coat thickness. Do not apply the next coat until the previous coat is fully dry (uniformly white or light gray with no dark wet spots). Running fans and dehumidifiers can speed drying time.

Can I skip the third coat of joint compound?

A three-coat finish is the industry standard for Level 4 finish (suitable for flat or eggshell paint). You can skip the third coat only if using a heavy texture that hides imperfections (Level 3 finish). For glossy paint or strong side lighting, a Level 5 finish (skim coat over the entire surface) provides the smoothest result.
